Vinyl-lined pools are high quality flexible preformed liners that are attached to a reinforced structural wall frame that is built into the ground. The wall frames can be made steel, aluminum, or a non-corrosive polymer. A huge benefit with vinyl-lined pools is that you can choose from literally 1000′s of shapes, styles, or features. Heck, you can even design your own! With this you are insured a style and color of liner that is perfect for your backyard. There are different thicknesses of liners usually between 20mm (.78 inches) and 27mm (1.06 inches) thick. We recommend a 27mm pool liner for added durability therefore, we have a special where you can get the quality and thickness of a 27mm at the cost of a 20. Plus, installation of a Vinyl-lined pool takes much less time than a concrete pool, only taking a few weeks, letting you soak up the sun in no time!

Here are some advantages of going with a Vinyl Liner Swimming Pool:

  1. Lower initial cost – Vinyl Liner Pools have the lowest initial cost of any of the three types of inground pools.
  2. The Sky is the limit with design and custom options – There are no limitations with the length, width, and depth of Vinyl Liner Pools. You can have all the desirable options from waterfalls, sun ledges, spill overs, etc. If you have a special style or shape in mind….Let us do it for you! These pools are so customizable that even if you wanted a Mickey Mouse design in your backyard, Backyard Leisure has you covered!
  3. Vinyl liner pools are nonabrasive – The vinyl liner material is smooth and soft to the touch.
  4. Easy Care – The vinyl material used in vinyl liner pools is also relatively non-porous so it inhibits algae growth so it doesn’t foster algae like Concrete pools.
  5. Low ownership cost – Vinyl pools are the easiest to care for and completely repairable. You don’t have the significant remodeling cost associated with other types of pools down the road.
  6. Quicker install time – Liner pools are as quick as fiberglass pools to install! Swim Sooner!

Concrete Inground Pools

Concrete (also known as Gunite or Plaster) Pools in some parts of the country can be popular forms of swimming pools. They are extremely customizable and and can be made into nearly shape or size. If you live in a part of the country with extremely high water tables this could be an option for you.

With that said, there are some significant disadvantages to going with a concrete pool:

  1. Significant cost – Concrete pools can typically cost 2-3 times as much as Liner or Fiberglass.
  2. Concrete Pool EtchingConcrete Pool Etching

  3. Maintenance- Failure to maintain proper calcium hardness balance in a concrete pool can cause significant and costly etching of the pool surface (see photos). Etching is basically where pieces and chucks of the pools surface comes of and falls to the bottom of the pool. Repairing this damage can be as costly as a new pool installation.
  4. The custom options and features that were exclusive to Concrete pools can be done on both fiberglass and vinyl pools for far less money.
  5. High Lifetime Cost – Concrete pools will need to be renovated every 8-15 years. This involves significant resurfacing and re-tiling the pool at an expense of $8k-$15k or much higher depending on the pool.
  6. More chemical use – Because the surface of concrete pools is very porous, more chemicals and filtration are required to prevent algae. The alkaline pH of the pool shell also constantly raises the pH of the water, requiring the frequent adding of acid to counteract the effect.
  7. Many swimmers and children find the rough bottom in a Concrete pool to be very abrasive and uncomfortable. It is not uncommon to scrape and or irritate your feet if the swimmer is in the pool for long periods of time and sitting on the pools steps or benches will certainly snag a swim suit.

For the reasons listed above Backyard Leisure does not do Concrete pools. Low maintenance, value, long term chemical cost, and just overall carefree pool ownership are to important to our company. Therefor, fiberglass and vinyl liner pools are the way to go. We look forward to showing you why.

Fiberglass Inground Pools

Fiberglass pools can be installed much faster than other types of pools since they are preformed at a factory, then shipped, and dropped into place with a crane. Fiberglass pools are nonporous and tend to use less chemicals than other pools. Because these pools are made in factories and shipped to their locations there are limitations to how big they can be and the variety of shapes you can have. Fiberglass pools are typically limited to no wider than 16′ because of the difficulty getting them from the factory to the customers home.

Here are a few of the advantages in going with a Fiberglass pool:

  1. Low maintenance – The gel coat surface of the fiberglass pool shell is nonporous. This inhibits the growth of algae and reduces the amount of sanitizing chemicals required to maintain the pool.
  2. Little or No lifetime cost – 99% of the time there is never any money invested in the care of the shell on fiberglass pools. No vinyl liner to replace and no resurfacing.
  3. Non-abrasive surface – The gel coat surface of fiberglass pools is smooth to the touch.
  4. Built-in Seats and Steps: Most fiberglass pool designs have seating and all have steps incorporated into the shell of the pool.
  5. Manufactured in a controlled environment – Fiberglass pools are built in the controlled climate of a factory. This insures a strict quality control and gives you piece of mind that the pool as been built to very high standards.
  6. Quicker installation – Because the shells of fiberglass pools are built off site, the installation occurs more rapidly. 3-5 weeks on average.
